History of the Yellow Ribbon
As Americans, we have become very used to seeing yellow ribbons tied around trees or mail boxes, or displayed on websites, to show support for our troops deployed overseas. Most of us assume that this is a custom that goes back many years, sometimes even until before the Civil War. However, the tradition of placing yellow ribbons is only a little over twenty years old.
During the Iran hostage crisis of 1980, when 52 Americans were held hostage by militants, the idea of displaying yellow ribbons in support of those US citizens seemingly emerged seemingly out of nowhere and took the country by storm.
The tribute is said to have been inspired by the popular song "Tie a yellow ribbon round the ole' oak tree", which was composed in 1972, and which was inspired by an oral folk tale that had been circulating since the 1950s.
The folk tale itself was inspired by the 1949 movie "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon", in which the main character wears a yellow ribbon around her neck to show her love for a US cavalry officer.
